The Independent Office for Police Conduct is considering an investigation into a fatal crash in South Bristol which occurred after a short police pursuit.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently deciding whether to launch a formal investigation into a fatal road collision that occurred in South Bristol in the early hours of Sunday, October 25. A teenage boy, who was a passenger in a vehicle involved in the incident, died at the scene.
The collision, which involved a white Nissan Juke and a black Audi S3, took place at the junction of the A37 Wells Road, Airport Road, and Wootton Park shortly after 4am. Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that the incident followed a short pursuit involving an unmarked police vehicle and the white Nissan Juke.
A spokesperson for the force confirmed that a 17-year-old boy was subsequently arrested at a residential property on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Following a medical assessment in hospital, he remains in police custody. Three other individuals, including two teenage passengers from the Nissan and the driver of the black Audi S3, were taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not currently considered to be life-threatening.
Because the collision involved police contact, the force made a mandatory referral to the IOPC. An IOPC representative stated that they are presently assessing the circumstances to determine if an independent investigation is required. In the interim, the police investigation is being overseen by a detective inspector from the Major Crime Investigation Team.
The A37 Wells Road remained closed throughout much of Sunday to allow for forensic collision investigation and vehicle recovery, with the route reopening shortly after 4pm. Specialist officers are currently providing support to the family of the teenager who died.
Avon and Somerset Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who possesses relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to assist with the ongoing enquiries. Witnesses are asked to contact the police on 101, quoting reference 5226347807.
