Calne Bowls Club expansion plans win backing from town council

Amended proposals to improve facilities at Calne Bowls Club have received unanimous support from town councillors, moving the project a step closer to reality.
Plans to extend and upgrade the clubhouse at Calne Bowls Club have reached a significant milestone after receiving unanimous backing from Calne Town Council. The proposal, which aims to enhance the venue at Hillcroft off Anchor Lane, now moves forward to the next stage of the planning process.
Under the revised scheme, the club intends to build a side extension and a new link to the existing premises. A key feature of the development is the provision of new ladies', gents' and accessible toilets, addressing long-standing needs for improved facilities at the site. The plans also include a general enlargement of the clubroom and a reconfiguration of the interior layout, designed to improve accessibility and remove trip hazards that have previously affected the building.
The town council's Amenities and Facilities Committee voted in favour of the proposals during a meeting on 5 October. As the owner of the land, the council is a key stakeholder in the project and also reached an agreement in principle for a new lease to cover the additional land required for the extension works.
While the town council has given its support, it has emphasised that the financial burden of the project will rest solely with the bowls club. This includes all costs related to the construction, the planning application fees, and any necessary remedial works to ensure the building meets current Energy Performance Certificate requirements.
The town council's support acts as a formal endorsement but does not constitute final planning permission. The application is now being processed by Wiltshire Council, which holds the final authority as the local planning authority. Residents and interested parties can review the full details of the proposal on the Wiltshire Council planning portal under the reference number PL/2026/04845.
