Wiltshire Council has approved plans for a new housing estate in Calne, which will include a mix of homes and contributions towards local infrastructure.

A long-running planning application for 90 new homes in Calne has been approved, marking the next stage for the housing site located off Spitfire Road. The scheme, brought forward by Allison Homes South West, received formal backing from the Northern Area Planning Committee on 14 October.

The development was previously subject to a period of uncertainty, having been deferred by councillors in August 2026 despite an initial recommendation for approval from planning officers. Following minor amendments to the proposal, the committee has now given the project the green light to proceed.

According to the developer, the site is intended to address local housing demand, with plans to provide a mix of two, three and four-bedroom properties, alongside a provision of affordable housing. The development also includes a designated play area and new green open spaces aimed at integrating the site into the existing neighbourhood.

As part of the planning agreement, the developer will provide financial contributions totalling more than £130,000. These funds are earmarked for local improvements, specifically targeting highways, sports pitch facilities and the installation of new pedestrian crossing infrastructure on Spitfire Road.

Andy Cattermole, planning director for Allison Homes South West, described the approval as a welcome step after a ten-month determination process. He confirmed that the delivery phase is now beginning and the company intends to work closely with council officers and local stakeholders as construction work commences over the coming months.

The approval comes at a time when Wiltshire Council is managing a housing register of approximately 3,800 people. This latest project is part of a broader push by the developer to increase housing stock across the South West region, with recent sites also established in Crewkerne and Congresbury.
