Wiltshire Police are investigating an incident involving an e-scooter in Calne town centre and have issued a stark warning regarding the potential seizure of privately owned vehicles.

Wiltshire Police have issued a formal warning to parents in Calne following a recent incident in which a young girl was seen riding an e-scooter dangerously close to pedestrians. Officers are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the episode, which took place in the town centre along The Pippin.

As part of their ongoing enquiries, police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved. While investigations continue, the force has stressed that they are considering appropriate action in response to the behaviour observed.

The incident has prompted a broader reminder from local officers regarding the stringent legal restrictions that govern the use of privately owned e-scooters in public spaces. Unlike rental schemes operating in some cities, privately owned e-scooters remain illegal for use on public roads, cycle lanes, or pavements in the UK.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police highlighted the significant risks posed to the public when such vehicles are operated without oversight. 'We would remind residents that privately owned e-scooters are subject to specific legal restrictions,' the spokesperson said. 'They can also present a significant risk to pedestrians and other road users when ridden irresponsibly.'

The force has issued a direct appeal to parents and guardians to reconsider the purchase of e-scooters for their children. Authorities have made it clear that where these vehicles are used illegally on public roads or other public areas, they may be seized by the police. In some cases, the vehicles could ultimately be destroyed if they are found to be in breach of the law.

The local policing team is encouraging anyone with concerns about the use of e-scooters in the town centre to get in touch. Information can be provided by contacting the police on 101 or by submitting a report via the official Wiltshire Police website.
