Chippenham market cancelled as Storm Austen approaches
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Chippenham's Friday high street market has been called off following a Met Office weather warning for strong winds across the region.
A popular market in Chippenham has been cancelled for this Friday, 23 October, as the region prepares for the impact of Storm Austen. Chippenham Town Council confirmed the decision to halt the outdoor event following a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office, which covers the entirety of southern England and Wales.
The warning highlights the risk of strong winds that could lead to potential damage and disruption across road, rail, and ferry networks. The council stated that the cancellation was necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of both traders and members of the public.
The market has been a feature of the town since 1205 and has been under the management of the town council since 2019. While the Friday session is affected, the council has indicated that the Saturday market is currently scheduled to proceed as planned. Officials have confirmed they are continuing to monitor the developing weather situation and will provide further updates should conditions necessitate a change to the Saturday schedule.
Residents intending to travel are encouraged to check local transport timetables and road conditions before heading out, as officials warn that journeys may take longer than usual due to the expected high winds.
