Commuters and bus passengers face disruption as the A4 closes for scheduled road maintenance, with diversions and shuttle services in place.

Motorists and public transport users are advised to plan their journeys carefully as a section of the A4 between Chippenham and Calne is set to close for essential maintenance. The closure is scheduled to take place today, Thursday, September 17, between 9.30pm and 3pm.

The work, which follows an initial notice issued by Wiltshire Council, is part of a broader programme of maintenance for the route. While the council’s primary diversion for general traffic is directed via the A350 around the southern edge of Melksham, continuing onto Eastern Way, the A3102 and the A342, bus passengers should prepare for specific changes to their travel.

Stagecoach has confirmed that its 55 service will be significantly affected during these hours. The service will divert via the B4069 between Lyneham and Chippenham. To assist those travelling locally, a shuttle service will operate between Lyneham and Calne.

A range of stops will be out of service for the duration of the closure, including:

The Causeway

Royal Oak

The Pack Horse

Long Close

Chippenham Cemetery

Stanley Lane

Pewsham Roundabout

Spires View

The Garage

Studley Crossroads

Gurkha Baynjan

Bremhill Turn

Road users are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys, particularly those travelling between Chippenham and Calne, as traffic is expected to be heavier than usual on the diversionary routes.
