Traffic has returned to normal on the M4 eastbound following a collision between two lorries that caused severe delays near junction 17 on Tuesday morning.
Commuters and motorists travelling on the M4 in Wiltshire faced significant disruption on Tuesday morning following a collision involving two lorries. The incident, which occurred on the eastbound carriageway shortly before 10am, necessitated the closure of two lanes near junction 17 for Chippenham.
Emergency services, including Wiltshire Police and the South Western Ambulance Service, were deployed to the scene. The impact of the crash was felt across the wider road network, with traffic monitors at the AA reporting delays of up to 92 minutes as vehicles were reduced to an average speed of five miles per hour.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing debris scattered across the carriageway, while traffic cameras captured the significant congestion as the motorway was brought to a standstill. The disruption persisted throughout the morning, with vehicles experiencing slow movement until shortly after midday.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police has confirmed that there were no serious injuries sustained in the collision and that no arrests have been made. Following the clearance of the vehicles and debris, the carriageway was reopened and traffic flow has since returned to normal levels. Motorists are no longer being urged to avoid the area.
