Wiltshire Police have uncovered suspected illegal drugs in vape liquids during a raid on a Chippenham business, prompting a warning about risks to young people.

Wiltshire Police have issued a public warning regarding the dangers of illegal substances found in vape products following a series of enforcement actions in Chippenham. Officers executed warrants at a town centre retail business and several residential properties on 19 October, leading to the discovery of quantities of suspected vape liquid containing class B drugs.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class B drugs. He has since been questioned by police and released on conditional bail while the investigation continues.

The operation was conducted under the banner of Operation Machinize, a national initiative designed to tackle money laundering and other forms of criminality facilitated through cash-intensive high street businesses. Detective Inspector Steve Edwards, who heads the Economic Crime Unit and Digital Investigations and Intelligence Unit for Wiltshire Police, described the discovery as part of a wider trend.

DI Edwards warned that the presence of illegal drugs in vapes is a growing issue that poses a significant risk to the public, particularly young people who may be unaware of the ingredients in the products they are consuming. He emphasised that organised criminal gangs have long exploited cash-intensive businesses to launder money and distribute illicit goods.

The force is now coordinating a multi-agency response to combat this activity. This includes working alongside Trading Standards, HM Revenue and Customs, the Department for Work and Pensions, and Immigration Enforcement to target criminal activity across all potential fronts.

How to report concerns

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or retail outlets that appear to be selling illegal goods. DI Edwards noted that intelligence from local residents is vital to the force’s ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal networks.

Residents who are concerned about potentially illegal business operations in their area are encouraged to contact Wiltshire Police through their official website or by calling 101. Information can also be provided anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
