Wiltshire Police have executed warrants at a Chippenham town centre shop and residential properties as part of a wider effort to tackle money laundering and illicit trade.

Wiltshire Police have launched a series of raids in Chippenham as part of a sustained crackdown on organised crime linked to cash-intensive high street businesses. Officers executed warrants at a town centre vape shop and several residential addresses on 19 October, leading to the arrest of a 28-year-old man on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

The operation, known as Operation Machinize, represents a national response to the use of retail outlets as fronts for money laundering and the financing of criminal networks. Detective Inspector Steve Edwards, who leads the force's Economic Crime Unit, noted that such businesses are often used to facilitate unlawful employment and support broader criminal activity alongside legitimate traders.

Local reaction to the enforcement has been supportive. Chippenham Town Councillor Nic Puntis, who operates a business on the high street, welcomed the police intervention. He stated that the action sends a necessary message to those operating outside the law and provides confidence to legitimate traders who follow regulatory requirements.

The Chippenham action follows a similar series of warrants executed across Swindon earlier in October. During those operations, authorities seized approximately £2,000 in suspected criminal cash and nearly 90,000 illicit tobacco sticks, with an estimated retail value of £74,700.

Councillor Paul Sample, cabinet member for environment and climate, emphasised the collaborative nature of the effort. The operation involved Trading Standards, Wiltshire Police and the Home Office. He highlighted that these partnerships have successfully secured twelve closure orders across the county for the sale of illegal tobacco and vapes.

Authorities are urging the public to assist in these ongoing efforts by reporting any concerns regarding the sale of illegal goods. Information can be submitted directly to Trading Standards South West at www.tssw.org.uk/work-areas/report-it/ .
