A staple of the Devizes town centre, The Little Bakehouse, will cease trading at the end of November as owner Phil Johns announces his retirement.

A well-known bakery in the heart of Devizes is preparing to serve its final loaves this autumn, marking the end of a decade-long presence on Little Brittox. The Little Bakehouse, which has become a familiar fixture for local shoppers, is set to close its doors permanently at the end of November.

The owner, Phil Johns, confirmed the decision following a significant period of reflection. For Mr Johns, the choice to retire is deeply personal, coming after a difficult year in which he lost his wife, Debbie, to cancer. Having also experienced his own health battles, he is now looking to step away from professional life to travel and spend time with family.

Reflecting on his time in the town, Mr Johns expressed gratitude for the reception he has received since opening his shop. A former police officer with the Avon and Somerset force, he returned to his family roots in baking around ten years ago to launch what he described as his 'retirement project'.

A decade of support

"I cannot go down the High Street without someone shaking my hand, which is really nice," he said. "The people in Devizes have been fantastic. They have supported the business so well, and I have made a lot of friends in the town. It costs a lot of money to set up a bakery, and they supported me. It has been humbling."

Since announcing the closure on September 16, Mr Johns said he has been overwhelmed by the kindness shown by residents and regular customers. He emphasised that the decision to close, while emotional, is the right one for his current circumstances as he looks to live life to the fullest.

Looking to the future

As he prepares to hang up his rolling pin for the final time, Mr Johns is turning his attention to plans for the future. He intends to embark on a series of trips, including travel around Europe, a visit to family in New Zealand, and a trip to the United States to visit relatives.

Despite the impending closure of the business, Mr Johns remains hopeful about maintaining the connections he has built within the Devizes community over the last ten years. He encouraged others to cherish their time and connections, noting that his experiences have given him a renewed perspective on the importance of living for the present.
