Devizes to hear synchronised bell ringing for anniversary celebration
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Residents in Devizes are set for a unique musical experience on October 17 as four church towers ring their bells simultaneously to mark a major milestone for local ringers.
Residents of Devizes will be treated to a rare sonic spectacle on the morning of Saturday, October 17, when four of the town's church towers ring their bells in unison for nearly an hour. The event marks the 125th anniversary of the Devizes branch of the Salisbury Diocese Guild of Ringers.
Starting at 10.30am, twenty-eight bell ringers, ranging in age from 12 to 84, will perform simultaneous quarter peals. The ringing will take place at St John’s church, St Mary’s, St James Southbroom, and St Mary of the Virgin in Bishops Cannings. The mayor of Devizes, Vanessa Tanner, is scheduled to launch the proceedings at St John’s.
The Devizes branch, which is among the largest in the Salisbury Diocese Guild of Ringers, was founded in 1901. Its membership has grown to include 241 active ringers, covering a wide geographic area including Melksham, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Westbury and Warminster. Beyond the anniversary performance, the guild remains a hub for the preservation of a centuries-old British tradition.
Bell ringing involves swinging bells through 360 degrees, a task that requires significant skill and strength, with some bells weighing as much as a small car. The guild aims to promote high standards of method ringing, the complex musical patterns that allow for extended performances.
Following the ringing, members of the branch will gather at St John’s church to recreate a commemorative photograph originally taken during the branch's centenary in 2001. The guild encourages those interested in learning this historic skill to make contact, noting that they welcome individuals of all ages and backgrounds regardless of religious belief. Further information on practice sessions and events is available through local towers or the Devizes branch directly.
