Construction teams have moved on-site to begin the first phase of renovating the historic Grade II* listed Assize Court in Devizes, which will become the new home of the Wiltshire Museum.

Work is officially underway to transform the historic Assize Court in Devizes into a modern centre for history and culture. Contractors from Ken Biggs have commenced the first phase of the £14.8 million project, marking a significant step in the long-term plan to restore the landmark building.

The enabling works, which began on 26 October, are scheduled to last for 12 weeks. During this period, the team will focus on essential preparation tasks to ensure the building is ready for full-scale redevelopment in early 2027. This includes the delicate removal of lead paint and lime plaster, as well as the removal of ceilings within the property.

The Grade II* listed building, designed by T. H. Wyatt in 1835, served as a courthouse until its closure in 1983. It has remained largely disused for decades, but the current project aims to preserve its architectural fabric while adapting it for public use. Once completed, the new facility will serve as the future home of the Wiltshire Museum, housing its internationally important collections in a modern setting.

A new chapter for the Assize Court

The completed hub is expected to feature new exhibition galleries, a space for national-standard special exhibitions, a café, and dedicated learning facilities. A flexible event space is also planned to provide a new venue for community gatherings in the town. Officials confirmed that the museum is currently scheduled to open its doors to the public in 2030.

The project, led by the Wiltshire Museum in collaboration with the Devizes Assize Court Trust, has reached a key milestone with the start of these initial works. Nicola Trowell, the programme manager for the project, described the start of the renovations as a monumental and visible step towards saving the building.

Funding for the project remains a primary focus for the organisers. To date, over £12.5 million has been secured, including a grant of £8.5 million awarded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in December 2025. With a total budget of £14.8 million required, the team is continuing to pursue further funding and public fundraising campaigns to cover the remaining costs.

The Mayor of Devizes, Councillor Vanessa Tanner, welcomed the development, noting that the project represents a significant opportunity for residents and tourists to engage with the town’s heritage. The site is expected to become a central hub for those interested in Wiltshire’s history, providing accessible space for educational and cultural activities.
