Oxfordshire couple share adoption journey to encourage others to consider the route

As National Adoption Week approaches, an Oxfordshire couple is sharing their experience of the early permanence adoption programme to encourage others to step forward.
A couple in west Oxfordshire is sharing the story of their recent adoption journey in a bid to encourage more people to consider opening their homes to children in need. Rachel and Dave, who first discussed the possibility of adoption over a decade ago, successfully welcomed their two-year-old daughter, Posy, into their home in February 2025.
The couple utilised the early permanence adoption programme, a pathway designed to provide babies and young children with stability as quickly as possible. This approach allows approved adopters to act as foster carers initially, providing a secure environment while court processes for permanent adoption are finalised. For Rachel and Dave, the experience allowed them to bond with Posy from an early stage, creating what they describe as a perfect family fit.
Reflecting on the process, Rachel said: Early permanence has given us the most beautiful gift. We have bonded with Posy in a way we never thought possible and in such a short space of time.
Adopt Thames Valley, the regional adoption agency hosted by Oxfordshire County Council, is actively seeking to recruit more adopters across the region. Officials stress that the programme is not about meeting specific, rigid milestones, but rather about providing a loving and stable environment for children who may have faced early upheaval. Councillor Sean Gaul, Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Young People’s Services, emphasised that for many children in care, consistency in daily routines—such as school runs or family meals—is profoundly impactful.
The need for new adoptive parents remains significant. In England, children spend an average of 646 days waiting for a permanent home. Figures for Oxfordshire show a slightly lower average of 537 days, though officials maintain that this remains a considerable portion of a young child's life.
For those interested in learning more about the process, Adopt Thames Valley offers an initial, no-obligation conversation. Residents can reach out for guidance by calling 0800 731 0171 or by visiting the official Adopt Thames Valley website.
The couple's story comes to light ahead of National Adoption Week, which runs from 19 to 25 October, highlighting the life-changing nature of the commitment for both the children and the parents involved.
