A new strategy for eighteen walking, wheeling and cycling routes has been launched to better connect communities across the Oxford area.

A long-term strategy aimed at revolutionising how people travel in and around Oxford has been officially launched. The Oxford Greenways masterplan outlines a vision for an integrated network of eighteen routes designed to improve walking, wheeling and cycling links between the city and surrounding areas.

Developed through a partnership between Oxfordshire County Council, Oxford City Council and the University of Oxford, the plan focuses on bridging the gap between urban centres and neighbouring villages. The proposed network covers a radius of approximately eight miles around the city, serving as a framework for future development and infrastructure investment.

The routes will comprise a mixture of newly constructed paths, upgrades to existing trails, and improvements to quieter on-road links. According to council officials, the masterplan aims to provide safer, more direct alternatives to car travel, with the ultimate goal of reducing road congestion and supporting healthier lifestyles for residents.

Connecting the region

The proposed network is set to link Oxford with several nearby destinations, including:

Woodstock

Kidlington

Wheatley

Berinsfield

Abingdon

Cumnor

Wootton

Eynsham

The delivery of these routes is expected to be phased over several years, utilising a blend of funding sources including government grants, council budgets and contributions from housing and commercial developers. By incorporating these pathways into future planning applications, officials hope to ensure that active travel is considered as a core component of regional growth.

A collaborative vision

Councillor Gareth Epps, the county council's cabinet member for transport, described the plan as a bold step forward for regional infrastructure. The Oxford Greenways masterplan is a bold and exciting vision for active travel in and around Oxford. High-quality, connected routes will help more people make sustainable journeys, reach opportunities and lead healthier lives.

For the University of Oxford, the initiative represents an opportunity to improve the daily commute for thousands of staff and students. Professor Mark E Smith, the university's pro-vice-chancellor for planning and resources, noted that the institution is fully committed to supporting the development of these green travel corridors to create a more liveable environment for everyone.

City council deputy leader and cabinet member for planning, Councillor Anna Railton, emphasised that as the region continues to grow, providing sustainable, safe alternatives to private car use will be essential for maintaining accessibility.
