Part of Cherwell Street is set to reopen this weekend after being closed due to a dangerous scaffolding collapse on 21 October.

A busy stretch of Cherwell Street in Banbury is scheduled to partially reopen this weekend, Oxfordshire County Council has confirmed. The road has been closed to traffic since 21 October, following the collapse of nearby scaffolding.

Following safety advice from Cherwell District Council, officials have determined that the carriageway furthest from the site of the collapse can be safely reopened to the public between the George Street and Bridge Street junctions. The decision follows a period of coordination between local authorities to ensure public safety.

To manage the flow of traffic once the route reopens, drivers should be aware of new restrictions. Right turns into Lower Cherwell Street and the Morrisons petrol station will be prohibited to assist with traffic movement. These measures are expected to be operational at some point over the weekend.

While this partial opening provides relief to the local road network, motorists are advised that the situation remains fluid. Further temporary closures of Cherwell Street are anticipated in the near future to allow for crane operations required to further stabilise the site.

Oxfordshire County Council, in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive, continues to monitor the area. A full reopening of the street will only be considered once further safety assessments have been completed and verified by the relevant authorities.
