Commuters heading towards Oxford should prepare for potential delays as two major road projects in Abingdon coincide starting on 28 September.

Motorists travelling through Abingdon are being urged to plan their journeys carefully as two significant roadwork schemes are set to run simultaneously for six weeks. The disruption, which begins on Monday 28 September, will impact key routes used by commuters heading towards Oxford and the surrounding areas.

Oxfordshire County Council has confirmed that work by housing developer David Wilson Homes at the Peachcroft roundabout will coincide with the council's own infrastructure project at the A34 Lodge Hill junction. Both sites are connected by a stretch of the A4183 Oxford Road, creating a concentrated area of roadworks.

Councillor Liz Leffman, the county council's Cabinet Member for Highways Construction and Repair, acknowledged that the decision to overlap the two projects is unusual. Typically, such schemes are staggered to minimise congestion. However, officials decided that allowing the projects to run concurrently would shorten the overall duration of the disruption and prevent further delays to these vital road improvements.

What to expect on the roads

Drivers should anticipate the following traffic management measures:

Peachcroft Roundabout: Temporary traffic lights will be in operation to manage traffic flow. This roundabout connects the A4183 with Dunmore Road and Twelve Acre Drive.

A34 Lodge Hill Junction: Two-way temporary traffic lights will be placed on the A4183, specifically between the entrance to the Lodge Hill garage and the start of the new south roundabout.

These measures are in addition to a pre-existing series of overnight closures on the A34 southbound, which are scheduled to continue until 5 October. The council has stated that they are working closely with all project teams and contractors to ensure activities are sequenced as efficiently as possible.

While officials have warned that some delays are likely unavoidable, the council has committed to monitoring the impact of the roadworks closely. This will allow for real-time adjustments to traffic management measures where necessary to help keep traffic moving through the town. Residents and regular commuters are advised to allow extra time for their journeys until the work is completed in early November.
