The Swan Street footbridge in Oxford has been closed to the public following the discovery of structural safety concerns, forcing pedestrians onto a longer diversionary route.

A pedestrian footbridge linking Swan Street to Ferry Hinksey Road in Oxford has been shut with immediate effect after inspectors identified significant safety issues. The bridge, which crosses the Osney Stream, serves as a regular route for local residents, including parents and pupils travelling to the West Oxford Community Primary School.

Oxfordshire County Council confirmed the closure was necessary to ensure public safety, noting that the decision was taken only after structural risks were identified. Councillor Liz Leffman, the Cabinet Member for Highways Construction and Repairs, acknowledged the importance of the crossing to the local community but stated that the council could not compromise on public safety.

Pedestrians who normally rely on the crossing are being diverted via West Street and Botley Road to reach Ferry Hinksey Road. Commuters and families are advised that the alternative route is expected to add approximately 10 minutes to the average journey time.

Council engineers, working alongside the authority’s primary highways contractor, M Group, are currently assessing the bridge to determine what repairs or further actions are required. At this stage, no reopening date has been confirmed. The council has indicated that teams are working to identify a solution to restore the route as soon as it is practically possible to do so safely.
