Tactical shift pays off as Paddy Lane finds form for Reading FC

After a challenging injury-hit debut, Paddy Lane has emerged as a crucial component of Leam Richardson’s tactical setup at Reading FC.
Paddy Lane has established himself as a vital presence on the left flank for Reading FC this season, marking a significant turnaround following a debut campaign hampered by fitness issues. The 25-year-old winger, who joined the club in July 2025, has successfully reinvented his role under manager Leam Richardson, providing the squad with a new attacking dimension.
His first season in Berkshire proved difficult, with injuries restricting him to 38 appearances and just four goal involvements. Supporters were divided on his long-term prospects as he struggled to replicate the form that saw him become a standout player at Portsmouth, where he played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Championship. However, persistent knee and tendon issues took their toll, and the transition back to competitive football after such layoffs was a challenging process.
Since returning to full fitness, Lane has undergone a tactical evolution. Rather than being restricted to a traditional wide role, Richardson has increasingly deployed the Northern Irish international as a left-wing back. This move has allowed Lane to operate effectively alongside other attacking wide players, creating a more fluid system that requires versatility, defensive discipline and high work rate.
Richardson has been vocal in his praise for the winger's professional attitude. "Paddy has been training excellently since he came back from pre-season," the manager said. "He has been asked to play in many roles and he has tucked to it like a duck to water."
While his statistics are still developing, Lane has already opened his account for the current campaign with a goal and an assist in the Carabao Cup. Beyond the numbers, his influence within the dressing room and his ability to link the defence to the attack have made him one of the most important figures in Richardson’s evolving squad. As Reading look to build momentum, Lane’s improved fitness and tactical adaptability appear to be providing the exact creative spark the club was looking for when they brought him to the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
