From seasonal trails to museum workshops, here is a guide to low-cost events taking place across Reading during the upcoming October half-term break.

Families in Reading looking for ways to keep children occupied during the October half-term have a range of affordable options available. With the school break approaching, several venues across the town are hosting events designed to entertain without breaking the bank.

Town Centre and Museum Activities

The Reading town centre is set to host the Autumn Adventure Trail, running from October 24 to November 1. This free event encourages families to download a map and follow the route through the heart of the town. For those heading to Reading Museum on Blagrave Street, a variety of activities are scheduled between October 24 and 31. These include the Pumpkin Trail and the Bayeux Battle Trail, both priced at £1.50, alongside free sessions such as The Big Draw on October 28. Additionally, the museum is hosting a free bat-themed event on October 24, where families can learn from Berkshire Bat Care and assist children in creating bat mobiles; booking is required for the talk.

For those interested in history, the Abbey Gateway will host a Victorian Schoolroom Experience on Thursday, October 29. Aimed at children aged five and over, the sessions at 11am and 2pm offer a glimpse into the past for £2 per person.

Community Events and Leisure

Broad Street Mall is set to host a Halloween edition of Broad Street Beats on Saturday, October 24, from 11am until 3pm. This free event includes live music from local artists, face painting, and a music bingo quiz. Meanwhile, Reading Libraries are hosting various craft sessions and children's activities throughout the week at multiple branches, including Central, Caversham, Tilehurst, Southcote, Battle, and Whitley.

For families seeking active pursuits, Palmer Park Leisure Centre is offering £1 swimming sessions for children under 16 during weekdays from 9am to 10am, as well as over the weekend.

Outdoor Options

Those looking for outdoor experiences can visit Wasing Pick Your Own Pumpkins and Woodland Trail near Aldermaston. Running from October 23 to 31, with earlier dates available, the site offers a trail, pumpkin picking, and various seasonal displays. Tickets start from £6.50 for those aged two and over, with free parking provided. Alternatively, Hallcourt Farm in Midgham offers a spooky woodland puzzle trail alongside pumpkin carving and outdoor games. For a cost-free day out, Reading’s numerous public parks, such as Prospect Park, Forbury Gardens, and Caversham Court, remain open to the public throughout the holiday.
