A new running club has been launched in Salisbury to offer a supportive, active community for women who have navigated the pain of pregnancy loss, stillbirth or neonatal death. The group was founded by Emma Taylor, a local volunteer with the national charity Sands, which provides support to bereaved families across the UK.
Ms Taylor, 36, was moved to create the club after finding that running became a crucial part of her own journey following the loss of her daughter, Skye, in 2023. She identified a need for a space where women could connect through physical activity rather than traditional sit-down support sessions.
While Sands already facilitates football teams for men who have experienced similar losses, Ms Taylor noticed a gap in provision for women seeking a similar outlet. She emphasised that the club is not intended to function as a formal therapy group, but rather as an inclusive community where women can find solidarity, fresh air and a listening ear.
Reflecting on her own experience, Ms Taylor said that feeling isolated after the loss of her daughter was a significant struggle. She hopes the club will help others realise they are not alone. The group is open to all, regardless of whether participants wish to walk or run, and the primary aim is to foster a safe, welcoming environment for those who have faced bereavement.
Participation is designed to be as low-pressure as possible, with the focus placed simply on showing up to connect with others who understand the experience. The organiser has expressed that while the club is for the benefit of all members, the initiative is also a personal tribute to her daughter.
