Irene Kohler, founder of the Silver Salisbury Group, has been named a finalist in the BBC Radio Wiltshire Make a Difference Awards for her services to older residents.
A long-serving Salisbury volunteer has been honoured for her dedication to improving the lives of older people across the region. Irene Kohler, the founder and chair of the Silver Salisbury Group, was named a finalist in this year’s BBC Radio Wiltshire Make a Difference Awards.
Ms Kohler was recognised for her extensive efforts in supporting older residents in Salisbury, Amesbury, Wilton and the surrounding villages. Through the Silver Salisbury Group, she has spearheaded various activities and events designed to keep older members of the community connected and active.
Reflecting on her nomination, Ms Kohler said: "I was absolutely gobsmacked when told that I was a finalist in this year’s BBC Radio Wiltshire Make a Difference Awards. I feel very lucky that I have the opportunity to do things in retirement, that when they go well, give me a real buzz."
She was keen to share the credit with those who have supported her mission, adding: "It wouldn’t have been possible without the support and hard work of our founding trustees, and now our current trustees and team of volunteers ensure it continues and grows."
The awards ceremony was held at the Blunsdon House Hotel in Swindon, where fellow nominees were also celebrated. Ms Kohler noted: "The eight winners were such amazing role models in our communities and deserve their awards."
The Silver Salisbury Group continues to offer a variety of services for the local older population. Currently, the organisation is delivering its Autumn Festival programme, which encompasses 30 low-cost or free events and taster sessions aimed at ensuring accessibility for all.
For those looking to get involved or find support, the group has published an A5 directory detailing weekly and monthly activities. Copies are available at local libraries, the Five Rivers Leisure Centre, Shopmobility, and the Salisbury Information Centre.
