A gas leak has forced the closure of a section of Devizes Road until next week, complicating existing infrastructure improvement works.

A section of Devizes Road in Salisbury remains closed to traffic following an emergency gas leak. The incident, which was reported on the evening of 30 October, has necessitated urgent intervention by SGN engineers who were already working in the area as part of a wider programme of gas main replacements.

The closure, which encompasses the stretch of road between Kingsland Road and Ashley Road, was put into effect on 31 October. SGN has confirmed that the leak has been made safe, but significant repair work is required to replace a section of pipe within the carriageway. As a result, the closure is expected to remain in place until 9 November.

Motorists are advised that a signed diversion route is currently in operation. The company has apologised for the disruption and confirmed that they are monitoring the site closely to ensure public safety throughout the repair period.

The emergency works sit within a larger, pre-planned project to replace gas mains along Devizes Road, which commenced on 12 October and is scheduled to continue until March 2027. While this wider programme was already expected to cause phased disruption, the gas escape has necessitated an immediate extension to the closure points, which now reach as far as Ashley Road.

Residents should be aware that the project is being delivered in distinct stages, with each phase currently estimated to last between three and five weeks. SGN has previously cautioned that as the works progress, the exact locations of closures and project timings may be subject to change. Further phases of the work are expected to move the focus of activity towards Palmer Road in the coming weeks.
