Five-month gas main replacement project to close Devizes Road in Salisbury
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Engineers from SGN are set to carry out a 22-week gas main replacement programme on Devizes Road in Salisbury, with phased closures beginning in October 2026.
A major infrastructure project is set to bring significant traffic disruption to Salisbury as engineers prepare to replace a gas main on Devizes Road. The work, commissioned by SGN, is scheduled to begin on 12 October 2026 and is expected to last for approximately 22 weeks, stretching into early March 2027.
The project is intended to secure a long-term, safe and efficient gas supply for the area, reducing the future risk of leaks. The work will be carried out by I&G Contractors Limited. Due to the location of the gas infrastructure directly beneath the carriageway, a series of phased road closures will be implemented to ensure the safety of both the public and the workforce.
The closures will impact the stretch between St Paul’s roundabout and the Highfield Road junction. The project has been divided into six distinct phases, with each phase expected to last between three and five weeks. During these periods, through traffic will be prohibited, though access will be maintained for residents living within the specific sections currently under construction.
Project phases and access
For the duration of the work, pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to navigate through the area, although cyclists may be required to dismount in certain sections where space is restricted. Motorists are advised that diversion routes will be clearly signposted throughout the duration of the works.
The final phase of the project will involve the closure of Gas Lane at its junction with Devizes Road. During this time, residents and visitors requiring access to properties on Gas Lane will be able to reach them via Coldharbour Lane.
SGN has confirmed that the project is timed to commence following the completion of separate local highways improvements in the area. The company has apologised in advance for the inevitable disruption and is encouraging members of the public to check for progress updates on their website and through their dedicated major projects portal.
Bus passengers are advised to contact their local service providers for information regarding potential route changes or delays during the five-month period. For further queries or concerns, SGN’s customer service team can be contacted on 0800 912 1700 or via email at customer@sgn.co.uk.
