Four fined £4,000 as Wiltshire Council steps up fight against Stonehenge fly-tippers
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Wiltshire Council has issued £4,000 in fines to four individuals caught dumping household and garden waste near the world-famous Stonehenge site.
Four individuals have been hit with a combined total of £4,000 in fines following a successful crackdown on illegal waste dumping near Stonehenge. The two separate incidents involved residents from Salisbury and Amesbury, who were each issued with a £1,000 fixed penalty notice after being identified by the council’s environmental enforcement team.
The authorities utilised covert CCTV cameras to capture evidence of the fly-tipping, which resulted in the immediate identification of those responsible. The incidents involved the illegal disposal of a mix of household and garden waste in the area surrounding the historic monument.
David Bullock, director of assets, highways and waste at Wiltshire Council, warned that the authority will continue to pursue those who blight the local landscape. He stated: Fly-tipping is a criminal offence that harms local communities and damages the environment. We are committed to tackling fly-tipping and we have a network of CCTV cameras placed in hotspots around the county to catch offenders.
Mr Bullock confirmed that in cases where sufficient evidence is secured, the council will take firm action, either by issuing fixed penalty notices or by pursuing prosecutions through the courts.
In a move designed to deter future offenders, the council has recently increased the maximum fixed penalty for fly-tipping from £1,000 to £5,000, in line with updated government guidance. This shift reflects a tougher stance on environmental crime across the county, aimed at ensuring that those who dump waste illegally are held fully accountable for their actions.
