Salisbury Hockey Club's men's and women's first teams faced narrow defeats in their opening league matches, while other club sides secured strong starts to the season.
Salisbury Hockey Club began their new league campaigns with a series of challenging fixtures across the weekend, as both the men's and women's first teams looked to find their rhythm in their respective opening games.
The Women's 1s travelled to Wycombe for a competitive league opener, ultimately falling to a narrow 2-1 defeat. Despite conceding an early goal, the Salisbury side responded with composure, using disciplined defensive distribution to set up attacking moves. Esme Rogers was a standout performer on the wing, providing consistent pressure and earning the title of Player of the Match for her efforts. Salisbury managed to draw level through a calm penalty flick conversion by Imke Sinnema, though Wycombe eventually reclaimed the lead to secure the win.
The Men's 1s also experienced a difficult start, suffering a 4-2 loss against Winchester 2s. After falling behind within the first minute of play, the team showed resilience to equalise through a goal from debutant Hugo Johnston. However, a defensive error allowed Winchester to regain the initiative, and despite a well-taken goal from a short corner by Jacob Stocker, the visitors held on to take the points.
Despite the opening results, the club management has noted the attacking threat and determination shown by both first teams as a positive foundation for the season ahead.
The wider club experienced a mix of results in their opening weekend fixtures:
Women's 3s: 3-0 victory over Waterside
Women's 4s: 1-0 victory over Romsey
Women's 5s: 8-0 victory over Southampton
Women's 6s: 1-0 victory against Southampton Uni
Strollers: 3-3 draw
The Men's 2s, 3s, 4s and Striders were all unsuccessful in their respective opening matches.
