Salisbury Rugby Club secured a 15-8 victory against Frome in testing conditions, keeping them at the top of the Counties 1 Tribute Ale Southern South table.
Salisbury Rugby Club successfully defended their position at the top of the league following a demanding 15-8 victory over Frome on Saturday, October 24. The match was defined by persistent rain and a strong, unrelenting wind, which placed significant pressure on both sides to maintain discipline and focus throughout the encounter.
The hosts broke the deadlock twenty minutes into the first half. Following a tactical 50-22 kick from Rob Crossley, Salisbury secured an attacking lineout, allowing number eight Rob Beecher to drive the ball over the line for the opening score. Frome responded well to the conditions, managing to sustain possession despite the weather, though they were unable to breach the Salisbury defence during the initial period.
Salisbury extended their lead on the half-hour mark. After forcing the visitors into an error under pressure near their own try line, flanker Will Murley recovered the ball to feed Andre Browning, who crossed for the home side's second try. Frome fought back with a patient, multi-phase attack to score their only try of the afternoon, leaving the score at 10-5 as the teams headed into the half-time break.
Early in the second half, Frome's Simon Westlake narrowed the deficit with a penalty, but Salisbury regained control shortly after. Following an attacking scrum, Rob Beecher once again broke through the defence, setting up Andre Browning for his second try of the match. The scoreline of 15-8 held for the remainder of the game, as Salisbury's set piece, particularly their lineout execution, helped them dictate the final period of play.
Fly-half Aaron Hold was praised for his tactical kicking and ball handling, which proved vital in the difficult conditions. With this result, Salisbury remains at the top of the Counties 1 Tribute Ale Southern South on points difference, narrowly ahead of local rivals Devizes. The first team is set to face Walcot in their next fixture, while the club's 2nd XV also celebrated a successful weekend with a 31-0 victory away at Melksham.
