Salisbury RFC's girls' rugby teams have begun their 2026/27 campaign with strong performances and a new commitment to regional league competition.

Salisbury’s Spitfires are aiming for a successful 2026/27 season, following an impressive opening weekend at North Dorset RFC’s Girls Rugby Takeover Day. The event saw the club's squads competing across the U11/12, U14, and U16 age groups, marking a promising start to the new campaign.

For the U11/12 squad, the opening matches provided an opportunity to demonstrate the skills developed over the summer. Coaches noted that the team’s rucking, tackling, and overall determination showed significant progress. The U14s, meanwhile, faced challenging competition against Wimborne and North Dorset. Despite the difficult results, the team was praised for their resilience and commitment, particularly during the final minutes of their match.

This season is set to be a milestone for the girls' programme, as it sees the launch of the region’s first U14 girls’ league. This new competition will span Wiltshire, Dorset, and Somerset, providing a consistent framework for development across the region. The U16 squad opened their season with a commanding 66-33 victory, highlighting both individual talent and strong team cohesion.

David Jackson, who previously led the girls' rugby department at Salisbury RFC, emphasised that the sport serves as a vital platform for building confidence and friendship. He also highlighted the squad’s new initiative to support The Elliot Project throughout the season. The charity, established in 2020, provides mental health first aid training to local workplaces and community groups.

Looking ahead, the teams are now preparing for further league fixtures, with the U16 squad scheduled to play their first HOB league match away at Farnham. Mr Jackson has called on the wider community to support the players by attending matches and engaging with the programme as it continues to grow.
