The owner of a long-standing local barbershop is seeking permission to open a new hair salon at 80 Manchester Road.

A local business owner with over a decade of experience in the area has submitted a planning application to expand his operations onto Manchester Road. Mr Irineo Monroe Fernandes, who has run Modern Cuts Barbers at 95 Manchester Road for 13 years, is seeking to establish a new hair salon at number 80.

The proposal involves a change of use for the ground floor of the property into a hair salon, with the first floor designated for a one-bedroom flat. According to the planning documents submitted to the council, the site spans 117.03 square metres and will not require any structural changes to the building's exterior.

If approved, the new salon is expected to support four members of staff, comprising three full-time employees and one part-time role. The applicant has outlined proposed opening hours of 9am to 7.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 7pm on Sundays and bank holidays. Access to the site will include four new cycle parking spaces, though the development involves the removal of existing car parking.

The application has received support from Councillor Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh. In a character reference submitted with the plans, she noted that the move represents an important step in the growth of the enterprise. She added that Mr Fernandes's long presence in the area demonstrates his investment in the business and his commitment to the local community.

The plans confirm that the development will result in no net loss or gain in the number of residential units in the area, focusing instead on the repurposing of the commercial space.
