A planning application lodged with the council outlines proposals to adjust the layout and parking capacity at the major Swindon supermarket.
A planning application has been submitted to Swindon Borough Council detailing significant alterations planned for the Tesco store on Ocotal Way. The proposals, filed by Tesco PLC, outline a series of modifications to the site layout, including changes to the existing car park and a structure extension.
The plans detail the installation of 14 new one-metre-high bollards designed for site security. Furthermore, shoppers can expect the addition of two new dedicated 'Dot Com' parking bays to support the store's home delivery operations. These new bays are set to be clearly marked with paint, alongside a designated zebra crossing to improve pedestrian safety within the busy car park.
A notable aspect of the application is a proposed canopy extension at the site. Technical specifications provided in the documents confirm the structure will be supported by steel columns and sheeting rails, with builders expected to match the new materials to the existing store aesthetic.
The modifications will result in a net reduction in parking capacity. The store currently offers 806 car parking spaces; if the local authority approves the plans, this number will drop to 790. According to the submission, the proposed works will be contained entirely within the existing paved and hardstanding areas of the site, meaning there is no requirement for biodiversity net gain or impact assessments regarding local green spaces.
The planning documents also confirm that the proposed changes are not expected to increase flood risk in the surrounding area and do not involve any alteration to existing vehicle or pedestrian access routes onto the public highway. The application is currently under consideration by council planners.
