Swindon residents are being reminded of the core requirements to ensure smooth waste collections following permanent shifts to collection schedules.

Swindon Borough Council is urging residents to familiarise themselves with waste disposal protocols to ensure their bins are collected on time. With permanent changes to collection schedules introduced in December 2025, many households have seen their designated days shifted by two working days, a change that remains in effect throughout 2026.

The council implemented this permanent shift to ensure a more consistent service during peak times and to mitigate the significant backlog issues that previously occurred over the Christmas period. Residents are reminded that if their collection was previously on a Monday, it is now on a Wednesday; if it was on a Friday, it is now on a Tuesday. The same two-day shift applies consistently across the rest of the week. Placing bins out on the incorrect day will result in a missed collection.

Key rules for successful collections

To ensure crews can complete their rounds, the council requires that bin lids are fully closed. Waste left on the floor around communal recycling facilities will not be collected. For those using the new food waste collection service, residents should ensure that both indoor five-litre caddies and outdoor 23-litre caddies are used correctly. Outdoor caddies must be kept in the locked position and placed at the edge of the property boundary by 6am on the scheduled collection day.

The council continues to place a heavy emphasis on the separation of materials. Items such as sanitary products, nappies, chocolate wrappers and crisp packets must be placed in the black wheelie bin or standard refuse bags. These refuse bags are collected weekly, while black wheelie bins are emptied fortnightly.

Recycling and specialist waste

Residents are advised against placing recyclable items in their black wheelie bins or blue waste bags. The council provides a 'waste wizard' tool on its website to help residents identify which items can be placed in recycling bins and which should be taken to the household waste recycling centre.

For garden waste, which is collected fortnightly, a subscription service is required. Residents may use a green wheelie bin, a black wheelie bin with a green lid, or a designated green bag for these collections.

Bulky waste items, such as furniture, mattresses and large electrical appliances like fridges, require a booked collection for which a fee applies. Similarly, clinical waste, including stoma bags or dressings, must be scheduled through the council to be collected either as a one-off or on a regular weekly basis. Further details on these services and current fees are available on the official Swindon Borough Council website.
