A fundraising campaign to support the family of 16-year-old Abbie Lainton has reached over £27,000 following her death in the Dominican Republic.
A community fundraiser established in memory of 16-year-old Swindon teenager Abbie Lainton is nearing its target of £30,000. As of the end of October, the appeal has raised more than £27,000, with donations continuing to support her family following a tragic boat accident in the Dominican Republic on 30 July.
Abbie, a dedicated cheerleading coach and former pupil at the Tanwood School for Performing Arts, was described by those who knew her as a bright and talented individual. The fundraising initiative, organised by Becky Jamieson, was created to provide the family with financial support during a period of immense personal loss.
Reflecting on her time at the Tanwood School for Performing Arts, a spokesperson for the school recalled Abbie as a long-standing member of their community. She was remembered as a performer who always brought energy and a warm smile to the stage, forming lasting bonds with her fellow dancers.
Her commitment to sport was equally significant at the Swindon Lightning Cheerleading club, where she had become a key figure both as a competitive athlete and a coach to younger members. A representative from the club expressed the deep impact of her passing on the wider team, stating that her kindness, enthusiasm and dedication to the sport were central to their gym. The club has shared their deepest condolences with the family and her wider circle of friends.
The loss of the young athlete has been felt far beyond the local area. Tributes were also shared by prominent figures in the international cheerleading community, including Netflix documentary star Dillon Brandt, who highlighted Abbie's remarkable dedication and character.
The fundraiser remains active for those wishing to contribute to the family support effort, marking a significant show of community solidarity for the teenager, who was looking forward to receiving her GCSE results at the time of the incident. Further details regarding the fund and how to contribute can be found through official community channels.
