Following a popular exhibition of historic images, organisers are setting up a dedicated history group to document the heritage of the Walcot and Parks area.

A project to document the changing face of Walcot and Parks is set to grow into a permanent fixture following the success of a recent community exhibition.

The display, held at the Buckhurst Community Centre as part of the national Heritage Open Days programme, showcased a visual record of the two neighbourhoods from the late 19th century through to the present day. Organised by the Pride in Place team at South Swindon Parish Council, the event served as a focal point for residents to share personal memories and contribute historic images to a growing collection.

Millie Lawlor, community engagement officer for the parish council, said: "We were really pleased to welcome so many residents and see people sharing their memories and interest in the area. We are looking forward to continuing to celebrate and document the heritage of Walcot and Parks in the future."

The exhibition was curated by a local resident known as Margaret, who compiled the chronological display of photographs. The event also offered attendees the chance to consult with members of the Pride in Place team and the chair of the Walcot and Parks Neighbourhood Board.

Building on this enthusiasm, plans are now underway to launch a formal Walcot and Parks history group in January. The initiative aims to provide a structured way for the community to continue gathering, preserving and celebrating the stories of their local area.

Residents who wish to contribute their own family photographs, share historic accounts, or get involved with the new group are encouraged to register their interest. Those interested in taking part should contact Millie Lawlor at the South Swindon Parish Council by emailing engagement@southswindon-pc.gov.uk .
