Second phase of upgrades planned for Buckhurst Fields in Swindon

South Swindon Parish Council has begun the scoping process for a second phase of improvements at the popular Buckhurst Fields site following a multi-million pound investment.
South Swindon Parish Council is moving forward with plans for a second phase of improvements at Buckhurst Fields, following the completion of a major refurbishment project in late 2025. The initial programme of works saw an investment of more than £600,000, which delivered a new skatepark, improved sports pitches, a refurbished pavilion and a new play zone for the Walcot East and Park North community.
Following these upgrades, the council has now turned its attention to a new masterplan for the site. During a Leisure, Environment and Amenities committee meeting held on 6 October, councillors discussed the scope for future developments designed to enhance the utility and biodiversity of the fields.
The proposed masterplan includes a variety of new facilities and environmental enhancements. Early designs suggest the inclusion of a designated enclosed dog area, a new cycleway, additional tree planting and hedgerows, and improvements to existing pedestrian and cycle routes. Other features currently being scoped include the installation of new street furniture, better signage, additional bins and seating areas, and an informal football space.
The project follows ongoing consultation with local residents. Feedback gathered by the council's community engagement officer as of 30 September revealed significant demand for further site improvements. Among the suggestions put forward by residents are requests for increased lighting and CCTV coverage, a community café, improved parking facilities, and dedicated spaces for cricket. There have also been calls for additional community garden areas and improved water facilities.
Council officers are now liaising with working parties and external contractors to turn these ideas into a formal, deliverable plan. This masterplan will ultimately serve as a visual guide, which the council intends to share with the public for further consultation before finalising the delivery schedule.
The initiative continues the council's wider efforts to improve local recreational spaces through its ongoing Pride in Place community projects, which have been instrumental in identifying the priorities of those who use the park daily.
