A Swindon resident is set to showcase his debut solo art exhibition in December, marking a new chapter after health challenges forced him to step away from his previous career.
A Swindon man is preparing to host his first solo art exhibition, marking a significant milestone in his journey to find purpose and connection through creativity after facing prolonged health struggles.
Jeff Finnie, 59, turned to art as a form of expression and therapy after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and other chronic conditions. These health challenges previously necessitated his withdrawal from the workforce, though he has remained determined to maintain a positive outlook despite the daily reality of chronic pain and inflammation.
Reflecting on his experience, Mr Finnie highlighted the importance of visibility for men living with invisible disabilities. He noted that those suffering from such conditions are often depicted only in the context of their illness, rather than for their resilience or their contributions to their community. His transition to the arts has provided a vital outlet, allowing him to channel the same energy he once applied to his past pursuits, including marathon running.
Having moved to Swindon from Rotherham ten years ago, Mr Finnie has found a welcoming environment within the town's creative scene. He expressed his gratitude for the local art community, stating that the support he has received has helped him feel truly settled and integrated as part of the town.
The exhibition, which represents the culmination of his recent creative work, is scheduled to be held at The Hub in Swindon during the first week of December. Members of the public are invited to attend an open afternoon on Saturday, 5 December, between 12pm and 4pm. Mr Finnie hopes that sharing his story will help raise awareness of the challenges faced by men living with chronic pain, while demonstrating the power of creative expression in finding new meaning.
