Swindon cenotaph readied for November Remembrance services

Swindon Borough Council has completed cleaning work at the Regent Circus cenotaph ahead of the upcoming Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day commemorations.
The cenotaph at Regent Circus has undergone a deep clean to ensure the memorial is in appropriate condition for the town's upcoming annual Remembrance and Armistice Day services. Swindon Borough Council confirmed that its street cleaning team completed the work on the structure and the surrounding paved area earlier this week.
The memorial will serve as the focal point for the borough's official commemorations next month. Residents are invited to attend two key services planned for November:
Remembrance Sunday: 8 November at 11am, featuring the traditional laying of wreaths and a two-minute silence.
Armistice Day: 11 November at 11am, which will include the laying of crosses and a further two-minute silence.
The council's preparations for the commemorative period extend beyond the monument itself. Around 1,000 commemorative poppies are currently being installed on lampposts along several of Swindon's major routes. This initiative, which was introduced last year, aims to honour both those who have served and current members of the Armed Forces.
Councillor Nick Gardiner, cabinet member for highways and transport, said the installation of the poppies had been well received by the public previously. He noted that the display serves as a visible reminder for the community to reflect on the sacrifices made by military personnel. The local events coincide with the national Poppy Appeal, which is organised by the Royal British Legion to raise funds for veterans, serving personnel and their families.
