A dedicated group of walkers has raised over £7,500 for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) after completing a 16-mile charity route across Swindon.

A community-led fundraising effort has once again demonstrated the spirit of Swindon, with a 16-mile walk raising over £7,500 for the suicide prevention charity, Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).

The event, held on Saturday, October 24, saw participants traverse a route covering various parts of the town, including Haydon Wick, the Great Western Way, Faringdon Park and the Outlet Village. This marks the sixth year the walk has taken place, an initiative spearheaded by local resident Tracey Boxall.

Tracey first established the annual event in 2021, two years following the death of her son, Alex. From humble beginnings involving just six friends, the walk has grown into an annual day of reflection and community support. This year’s efforts have surpassed the original target of £6,500, with 212 supporters contributing to the final total.

Reflecting on the success of the initiative, Tracey expressed her gratitude to the local community. She noted that the ongoing fundraising not only provides vital financial support for the charity but also serves as a beacon for those in need, with strangers frequently reaching out to her and CALM for guidance.

The walk is just one component of a wider, multi-year fundraising campaign. Over the years, supporters have organised skydives, marathons, fishing competitions, cake sales and various social events, collectively raising more than £70,000 in memory of loved ones.

Councillor Vinay Manro joined the walkers on Saturday, providing live updates on the group's progress throughout the day. He praised the participants for their high spirits and thanked the public for their support during the trek.

The Campaign Against Living Miserably provides critical resources and a support helpline for individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts, as well as those bereaved by suicide. According to the charity, £12.20 is sufficient to fund one potentially life-saving call. Those wishing to support the ongoing fundraising efforts can donate through the official online page.
