Wiltshire Police are increasing officer presence across Swindon and the county this weekend to tackle anti-social behaviour during Halloween celebrations.

Wiltshire Police have confirmed they will be deploying additional patrols across Swindon and the wider county throughout the Halloween and Bonfire Night period. The move aims to ensure that residents can enjoy the festivities safely and provides a swift response to any reports of anti-social behaviour.

Chief Inspector Steve Jolly, who leads the force's Prevention Hub, urged the public to consider the impact of their celebrations on others. He noted that while Halloween is an opportunity for families to enjoy themselves, residents should remain respectful of their neighbours, particularly the elderly and those who may feel vulnerable.

For those planning to take part in trick-or-treating, the force has issued guidance to help keep children safe:

Children should always be accompanied by a trusted adult.

Stick to well-lit, familiar routes and avoid shortcuts through parks, alleyways or private gardens.

Ensure costumes do not restrict movement and that any masks allow for clear vision.

Carry a torch and a fully charged mobile phone if possible.

Only visit homes where you are confident you will be welcome.

The police are also encouraging residents to be cautious when answering the door to strangers. They suggest checking who is outside before opening and only engaging with callers if you feel comfortable doing so. Those who would prefer not to have trick-or-treaters at their home can download a free 'No Trick or Treat Here' poster from the official Wiltshire Police website.

Anyone who witnesses criminal damage or experiences anti-social behaviour should contact the police. In an emergency, always dial 999. For non-emergency concerns, residents can contact Wiltshire Police online or by calling 101.
