Swindon Borough Council has confirmed supply chain issues are causing significant delays in the delivery of black wheelie bins and recycling containers across the borough.

Swindon residents are facing ongoing delays in receiving essential waste and recycling containers as Swindon Borough Council deals with a shortage of stock. The local authority has confirmed that its supplies of black wheelie bins are currently exhausted, with further manufacturing delays also affecting the availability of recycling boxes.

The issue stems from a wider manufacturing failure impacting suppliers used by a number of councils across the country, leading to extended wait times for those requesting new or replacement equipment. In a statement addressing the service disruption, the council indicated that it is working to resolve the backlog, with an aim to deliver pending food waste bins, wheelie bins, and recycling boxes by 23 November 2026.

For those awaiting recycling containers, the council has provided guidance on how to manage waste in the interim. Residents are advised that if they require additional capacity for their recycling, they should use a sturdy container of a similar size to the standard council-provided boxes for the collection of paper, card, and glass. This alternative container will be accepted by collection crews while the official supply issues persist.

The council has also clarified that reusable recycling bags may be subject to longer delays than other items. Residents who have already submitted a request for containers do not need to contact the council again, as the system will automatically process the outstanding orders once stock becomes available.

Under normal circumstances, the council aims to deliver new or replacement containers within 10 working days. Residents awaiting a replacement wheelie bin are reminded to keep their damaged container close to their property boundary to ensure it remains visible for collection crews to remove once the replacement is delivered.
