Swindon residents urged to report road and pavement damage amid dry weather concerns
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Swindon Borough Council is calling on the public to flag areas of subsidence and cracking as shifting ground conditions affect local footpaths and roads.
Residents in Swindon are being encouraged to report instances of cracked pavements and road subsidence as recent dry weather conditions continue to impact local infrastructure. Ground movement, caused by long periods of dry weather, has led to a noticeable increase in surface damage across the borough.
Local authorities are currently working to address specific reports, including damage identified at the secret garden play area on Boness Road. Wroughton and Wichelstowe Parish Council has confirmed that repairs to the play area are underway, with a spokesperson asking residents to remain patient while the work is completed.
Councillor Daniel Adams highlighted the broader impact on the town's transport network on Sunday, 31 August. He noted that while Swindon Borough Council teams have been prioritising the most severe safety hazards, the scale of the shifting ground means the authority relies heavily on public reports to identify where intervention is required.
Councillor Adams emphasised that while temporary measures are currently being used to make high-risk areas safe, there is a wider need for durable, long-term repairs to tackle the damage caused by the environmental conditions. He said: "With the dry weather, we have seen a large increase in the number of cracks and areas of subsidence as the ground shifts and moves."
Residents who spot significant defects in their local roads or pavements are encouraged to report these directly via the Swindon Borough Council website . Providing precise locations helps the council assess the damage and prioritise necessary maintenance work more effectively.
