A new family-run bakery has opened its doors in Swindon, proving an immediate hit with local residents during its opening weekend.
A new family-run bakery has opened in Swindon, with its owners reporting an unexpectedly busy first day as residents flocked to try their traditional Brazilian treats.
Sil Mendez Bakery, situated on Cheney Manor Road near the junction with Whitworth Road, welcomed its first customers on Saturday. The popularity of the new venture meant the team had to work quickly to restock their shelves after selling through their initial supply of goods by 8.45am.
The bakery is the project of Silvana Mendez, who began her baking journey at home during the pandemic. After success sharing her sourdough and cakes with friends and family, she spent time honing her skills at the Minas Brazil café on Commercial Road before securing the premises in Cheney Manor, which was previously a tattoo parlour.
The shop offers a selection of traditional Brazilian products, including pão francês, which are soft French-style rolls, and salgados—a variety of classic savoury snacks. Among the items available are coxinha, a popular teardrop-shaped snack made of shredded chicken covered in dough, which is then battered and fried. The bakery also serves artisanal sweet breads, sourdough loaves, pastries, cakes, and decorated cupcakes.
Beyond the baked goods, the shop stocks a selection of ingredients and goods for home use, alongside drinks including Brazilian soft drink Guaraná Antarctica.
In a nod to the local creative community, the bakery has incorporated a seating area featuring work by local artists, some of which is available for purchase. The owners encouraged local creatives to contact them ahead of the opening to arrange the displays.
Sil Mendez Bakery is now open to the public with regular operating hours set for 6am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 12pm on Sundays.
