The landmark Wetherspoons pub on Regent Street has confirmed it will cease trading permanently on Sunday, November 8.

The Savoy, a fixture of Swindon town centre's nightlife and social scene, has confirmed that it will be closing for good this month. Staff at the Regent Street premises have announced that the pub will hold its final day of trading on Sunday, November 8.

The venue, which was first listed for sale in May 2026, will not reopen for service on Monday, November 9. The announcement brings an end to the pub's tenure in the heart of Swindon, a move that has met with vocal disappointment from regular customers who frequent the location for its accessibility and proximity to local amenities such as the theatre.

While staff have confirmed the closure date to patrons, details regarding the future of the building remain unconfirmed. Employees noted that they have received little information from head office concerning the identity of any prospective buyer or the building's ultimate fate.

Speculation about the site has been ongoing for several months. In September, the Citifaith International Church, which already occupies the floor above the pub, expressed an ambition to raise £145,000 to purchase the building and expand its place of worship. However, no official confirmation has been provided by either JD Wetherspoon or the church regarding whether this acquisition has proceeded.

For many residents, the loss of The Savoy marks a significant change for the town centre. Regular visitors have described the closure as the end of an era, citing the pub's role as a convenient meeting point. Concerns have been raised by some locals regarding the future use of the site, with a expressed hope that the building will be repurposed in a way that benefits the town centre rather than remaining vacant or being converted into retail units that they feel are already over-represented in the area.
