Drone users in North Swindon are being warned that flight restrictions related to RAF Fairford have been extended, rendering local flying unauthorised.

Drone enthusiasts and commercial operators in North Swindon are being warned to check their flight maps following an expansion of restricted airspace. The no-fly zone, which centres on RAF Fairford, has been extended into parts of northern Swindon and the Highworth area.

Local drone operator Jason Spickett, who monitors airspace restrictions, highlighted the issue after being unable to secure permission for flights within the area. The restriction, which encompasses a six-mile radius around the military site, has been strictly enforced, with authorities currently permitting only emergency flights.

The measure follows a major security incident at RAF Fairford on Sunday, September 27. During that event, a significant emergency response was deployed to the base, which led to temporary evacuations of nearby homes and a heightened security presence.

While initial reports indicated the temporary restriction would remain in place until Wednesday, operators have been cautioned that this could be further extended following consultations with RAF Brize Norton. Local flyers are advised to treat the area as restricted until official confirmation of the zone's status is provided by civil aviation authorities or military site officials.

In connection with the events on September 27, police activity has been ongoing, including the arrest and subsequent bail of individuals in relation to potential offences under the Terrorism Act. These security concerns remain the primary driver for the current restrictions on civilian drone activity in the vicinity.
