Free shuttle bus service to launch as major Faringdon road closure begins
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Commuters on the S6 route face significant disruption as a seven-month road closure on Coxwell Road begins, necessitating a temporary free shuttle bus service.
Travel disruption is set to impact residents and regular commuters between Swindon and Faringdon as a major road closure on Coxwell Road gets underway. The route, which serves as a key link for the Stagecoach S6 bus service, will be closed from 7 September 2026 until 16 April 2027 to allow for significant infrastructure upgrades.
The closure of the A420 and Great Coxwell junction is required to facilitate the construction of a new signal-controlled junction and a dedicated right-turn lane. Additionally, utility apparatus in the area must be diverted, and the existing carriageway will be widened. Oxfordshire County Council has stated that these improvements are designed to facilitate smoother traffic flow, specifically for vehicles exiting new housing developments onto the westbound A420.
The scale of the works, which are linked to the Badbury Green housing development by Wain Homes, will force the Stagecoach S6 service to divert from its usual path along Coxwell Road. To mitigate the impact on those relying on public transport, a free shuttle bus service is being introduced. This shuttle will connect the affected area to the town centre and ensure passengers can still access the S6 service.
Drivers are also set to face diversions during the seven-month project. Signage will be in place to guide motorists via an alternative route involving the A420, London Street, Coxwell Street, and Coxwell Road. While the closure order allows for the work to remain in force for up to 18 months, current council estimates suggest the project will conclude by mid-April.
Emergency vehicles will remain exempt from the closure restrictions. Local residents and regular users of the S6 service are advised to plan for additional travel time during the works and to monitor local authority updates regarding the shuttle bus timetable and any changes to the diversion signage.
