An inquest has been opened into the death of a 45-year-old Swindon man who died following a collision involving his broken-down car on the A34.

An inquest has been opened into the death of Marc Peter William Waterman, a 45-year-old resident of Merlin Way, Swindon, following a fatal collision on the A34 near Sutton Scotney. The incident occurred on October 23, when a van collided with Mr Waterman's vehicle after it had broken down.

Area coroner Jason Pegg formally opened the inquest at Winchester Coroner’s Court on Monday, November 2. It was noted during the hearing that Mr Waterman was inside his vehicle at the time of the collision. Preliminary findings indicate the cause of death was a neck injury, with further histology and toxicology tests currently pending.

The investigation into the collision remains ongoing. A 33-year-old man from Walsall, who was driving the Mercedes Sprinter van involved in the crash, was previously arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury by careless driving. He has since been bailed with conditions until December 4.

The collision resulted in a multi-vehicle incident, during which a one-year-old passenger in the van sustained life-threatening injuries. A woman and a child were also present in the vehicle at the time, and a dog died at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Oliver Cahill-Smith of the investigating force has issued a call for witnesses as part of a thorough inquiry. Police are specifically seeking dash-cam footage from motorists who were travelling southbound on the A34 between Upper Bullington and Worthy Down between 3pm and 3.20pm on October 23. Anyone with relevant information or footage is encouraged to contact the police by calling 101 and quoting the reference number 44260520753.

The coroner has adjourned the inquest, with a further review scheduled for April 2027 to allow for the progress of the ongoing police investigation.
