M4 road closures: Essential travel advice for Swindon drivers this weekend
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

National Highways has announced a series of scheduled road closures on the M4 motorway spanning from Friday, October 9, to Monday, October 12, affecting key junctions.
Motorists travelling across the region this weekend are being urged to check their routes as National Highways carries out essential maintenance on the M4 motorway. The programme of work, scheduled between Friday, October 9, and Monday, October 12, will result in slip road and carriageway closures at various junctions.
Drivers planning travel from Swindon towards neighbouring cities such as Bristol and Reading should take note of the following disruptions:
Friday, October 9
Between 9pm and 6am on Saturday, maintenance work will impact Junction 11. This includes the closure of the M4 westbound entry and exit slip roads, with lane closures also in place for drainage works. Additionally, technology-related works will cause slip road and lane closures on the M4 westbound at Junction 7 during the same hours.
Sunday, October 11
Significant closures are planned for Sunday evening, beginning at 9.30pm and lasting until 6am on Monday. This maintenance focuses on the Junction 20 area. The following sections will be closed:
M4 westbound carriageway between Junction 19 and 20.
M4 westbound Junction 19 entry slip road.
The M4 westbound exit slip road at Junction 20 leading to the M5 northbound Junction 15.
Drivers needing to navigate this area are advised to follow the diversion route via the M5 southbound, exiting at Junction 16 to turn around before rejoining the M5 northbound.
Monday, October 12
Further maintenance continues into the start of the week. From 9pm until 6am on Tuesday, drainage work will close the entry and exit slip roads at Junction 13 on the M4 westbound. Concurrently, technology upgrades will result in a slip road and lane closure on the M4 eastbound at Junction 8/9, alongside a partial roundabout carriageway closure.
Between 10pm and 5.30am, motorists on the M4 eastbound between Junction 3 and Junction 2 should prepare for lane and slip road closures due to concrete works. Furthermore, from 10pm to 6am, the M4 westbound structure maintenance at Junction 20 will once again require traffic to use the M5 southbound diversion via Junction 16.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to keep updated with the latest information via the National Highways website before setting off.
