A major new route connecting the Wichelstowe development with Junction 16 of the M4 has officially opened following extensive engineering works.

A significant new transport link has opened in Swindon, providing a direct connection between the Wichelstowe development and Junction 16 of the M4. The route, known as Wichel Way, features a purpose-built underpass constructed beneath the motorway.

Formerly referred to as the Southern Access Road, the project is considered a vital piece of infrastructure to support the ongoing growth of Wichelstowe, which is slated to deliver approximately 4,000 new homes, a district centre, and restored sections of the Wilts & Berks Canal. The new road links Hay Lane and Wharf Road to Redposts Drive and Croft Road.

The engineering project was notable for its complexity, as the underpass was excavated and constructed beneath the M4 without requiring significant lane closures or disruption to motorway traffic. Councillor Nick Gardiner, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, described the opening as the culmination of years of work.

"Creating an entirely new route beneath the M4 was a significant feat of engineering," said Cllr Gardiner. "We can now see the full benefit of that work, with a new route that will improve access to Wichelstowe, while also providing new walking and cycling links across the M4."

While the underpass itself was completed by the council four years ago, the final road connections were finished in phases by developers Wichelstowe LLP. The project was funded through a combination of local and national investment, including £22.9 million from the Department for Transport via the former Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, alongside £5.8 million from Swindon Borough Council.

Current traffic calming measures remain in place on the new route and will continue until future phases of housebuilding extend further south and new junctions are established. Plans are also in development to commission public artwork for the underpass, subject to approval from National Highways, which aims to transform the structure into a welcoming gateway for the Wichelstowe community.
