Wiltshire Police have confiscated a massive haul of counterfeit cigarettes and cash during a crackdown on illicit trade in Swindon.
Wiltshire Police have seized over 90,000 illicit cigarettes as part of a targeted enforcement operation against illegal businesses operating in Swindon. The haul, which officers estimate has a resale value of approximately £74,700, was recovered during raids on five local premises conducted on 9 October.
The operation, titled Operation Machinize, is a wider, nationwide initiative focused on disrupting money laundering schemes and tackling illegal activity within local businesses. In addition to the counterfeit tobacco products, officers recovered £2,000 in cash suspected to be linked to criminal proceeds.
Authorities confirmed that the search warrants were executed at a variety of high street premises, including vape shops, tobacco outlets, barber shops, and mini markets. One of the locations identified by police was the Krakow Polski Sklep on Fleet Street.
Detective Inspector Steve Edwards, head of the Wiltshire Police Economic Crime Unit, emphasised the impact such activities have on the broader Swindon community. He stated that the operation forms part of a long-term, sustained effort to dismantle organised criminal gangs who often use everyday high street storefronts to conceal their activities.
According to the police, these illicit operations not only fund more serious organised crime but also frequently rely on the employment of illegal workers, undermining legitimate local traders. The investigation into the seized items and the involvement of the shops remains active.
Wiltshire Police have appealed for the public to remain vigilant. Residents who notice any suspicious behaviour, or who have concerns regarding business practices in their local area, are encouraged to contact the force to assist with the ongoing enquiry.
