Residents demand action as Wanborough Road suffers from HGV traffic nightmare

People living on a residential road in Swindon are calling for urgent safety measures to address issues caused by heavy goods vehicles and commuter traffic.
Residents living on Wanborough Road near the White Hart roundabout have renewed their calls for Swindon Borough Council to take action against what they describe as a recurring nightmare of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) traffic and speeding motorists. The narrow stretch of road has become a focal point for complaints, with locals reporting that it is frequently used as an unauthorised car park for HGV drivers and as a rat run for commuters attempting to avoid congestion at the nearby junction.
Local resident Nancy Walters, who has been campaigning for improvements for four years, claims that the current conditions have made the street dangerous for those living there. According to reports from the community, the presence of large lorries and commuter vehicles acting as an unofficial park-and-ride for those travelling into Oxford has significantly reduced visibility. This has left some residents, particularly the elderly, feeling anxious about pulling out of their own driveways due to a series of near misses with passing vehicles.
Mrs Walters says that drivers frequently speed through the area to avoid the White Hart roundabout, creating a hazard for pedestrians and local traffic. In response to these ongoing frustrations, residents are calling for the council to install a formal weight restriction on the road and introduce traffic-calming measures such as a chicane to force drivers to slow down.
Swindon Borough Council has confirmed that it is aware of the situation and is in communication with residents. Councillor Nick Gardiner, the cabinet member for highways and transport, stated that he is working alongside the local ward councillor, Marco Di Pinto, to address the concerns directly. He added that council officers are currently investigating potential solutions to prevent inappropriate overnight parking by HGVs, with a view to implementing changes to the road as quickly as possible.
