Swindon Borough Council is considering moving a bus stop on Victoria Road to address traffic conflicts and access issues for local residents.

Swindon Borough Council has unveiled proposals to relocate a bus stop on Victoria Road in Old Town, citing ongoing concerns about road safety and traffic flow. The move, which would see the stop shift to a new position between Dumbarton Terrace and Hunt Street, is intended to alleviate long-standing conflicts between buses and other road users.

The current site of the stop has been identified by the council’s traffic management and road safety team as problematic. Situated on an S-bend and a steep incline, the stop currently struggles to accommodate buses safely, with drivers frequently reporting difficulties pulling away from the kerb. These issues are often compounded by vehicles parked along the narrow stretch of road, which the council states creates a hazardous environment for both bus operators and pedestrians.

In a formal communication to local residents, the council confirmed that the current location is not considered ideal. Residents have previously called for the stop to be moved further along the road to provide improved access near Hunt Street. In addition to the relocation, the council is planning to adjust parking restrictions in the immediate area. This includes revoking parts of the existing 'no waiting at any time' order and implementing a dedicated bus-stop clearway at the proposed new site to prevent obstructions.

The council is currently collating feedback from residents, stakeholders, and local bus operators. This initial stage of engagement will determine whether the proposal progresses to a formal statutory consultation phase. Residents have been encouraged to review the plans and submit their views, as the volume and nature of the feedback will directly influence the council’s next steps. Officials have stressed that they remain committed to enhancing passenger safety while minimising potential disruption to other road users.

This proposal follows a recent trend of transport adjustments in the area, including a relocation in early October of a stop from St Helens View to Okus Road, which was similarly prompted by concerns regarding parked vehicles obstructing bus routes. Further updates on the Victoria Road project are expected once the current consultation period concludes.
