Strong winds from recent storms have caused significant travel disruption in Swindon and across Wiltshire, with road closures currently in place.

Residents in Swindon and Wiltshire are being advised that the recent period of intense, stormy weather is finally showing signs of abating. Following the impact of Storms Austen and Boelo over the weekend, the Met Office has indicated that while gusty conditions are expected to persist for a few more days, the worst of the weather should subside by the middle of the week.

As of Monday, October 26, wind speeds in Swindon remain elevated, with gusts of up to 30mph anticipated throughout the day. The forecast suggests that gusts will peak again on Tuesday at approximately 33mph before beginning a gradual decline. Residents can expect conditions to improve significantly by Wednesday, with speeds dropping to 25mph, and falling further to 17mph by Thursday.

Road closures and travel advice

The high winds have left a trail of disruption across the region, necessitating several road closures that motorists should continue to factor into their travel plans. Swindon Borough Council has confirmed that Broome Manor Lane remains closed following reports that a tree was uprooted behind the local golf course and was deemed at risk of falling.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, allowing extra time for their journeys while council teams work to clear the site and ensure the area is safe for traffic. Additionally, Restrop Road in Purton remains blocked by a fallen tree, with the closure persisting into Monday morning.

Further afield, a significant incident occurred at the Dorcan Industrial Estate on Saturday, October 25, where a large tree fell onto a parked van. The tree blocked access to several local businesses, including the Newmedica Eye Health Clinic and nearby office premises. No injuries were reported, though the scene highlighted the severity of the weekend's conditions.

Staying safe

Although Wiltshire is currently not subject to active Met Office weather warnings, the recent damage serves as a reminder to exercise caution during periods of high wind. Residents are encouraged to check for further updates regarding road accessibility before travelling, particularly as the gusty conditions continue until the forecast improvement on Thursday.
